To inform the community about how public schools in
Hillsdale County, including charter schools, will respond to the Homeland
Security Advisory System, the following information is provided.
The Homeland Security Advisory System is color coded. GREEN represents a “low
risk” of terrorist attack. BLUE represents a “general risk”, YELLOW a
“significant risk”, ORANGE a “high risk”, RED a “severe risk”. The level of risk
is determined by the Office of Homeland Security, in our nation’s capital. This
system represents the overall risk for the nation, not necessarily for a
particular state or county. Even if the National Security Advisory System goes
to RED (severe), this does not necessarily mean there is a direct threat to
Michigan, or to a local county. The Governor, who issues orders through the
State Police, determines Michigan’s specific threat level.
Should the National Security Advisory System go to RED, PUBLIC SCHOOLS IN
HILLSDALE COUNTY, INCLUDING CHARTERS, WILL NOT AUTOMATICALLY CLOSE. Schools will
close only by order of the State Police, due to a threat specific to Michigan.
In the event of a state police order to close schools, ALL PUBLIC SCHOOLS,
INCLUDING CHARTERS, IN HILLSDALE COUNTY WILL CLOSE, AND WILL REMAIN CLOSED UNTIL
FURTHER ORDER.
The State Police also have the authority to send children home from school, or
keep them in school buildings, in response to a specific threat.
FOR INFORMATION REGARDING SCHOOL CLOSINGS, EARLY DISMISSALS OR THE RETENTION OF
CHILDREN IN THEIR SCHOOL BUILDINGS AS A RESULT OF A SECURITY THREAT, PLEASE
LISTEN TO THE RADIO OR WATCH LOCAL TV BROADCASTS. Or, log onto the Hillsdale
County Intermediate School District web site at www.hillsdale-isd.org.
The public schools of Hillsdale County are committed to protect and ensure the
safety of our students and staff. Please call your local school district for
more information.
